2024 Thangatha Estate P1 AA
Lemonade, cherries, brown sugar
Cupping score: 84-86
Grown on the volcanic slopes of Thangatha Estate in Meru County, this lot blends Ruiru 11 and Batian, two varieties selected for their resilience and complex flavor potential. Bright red fruit notes lead into a tangy citrus acidity reminiscent of fresh lemonade, balanced by the deep sweetness of brown sugar. As the coffee cools, subtle herbal undertones emerge, adding dimension to the cup.
Ruiru 11, introduced in 1985, was bred for disease resistance and adaptability to moderate altitudes (1,000-1,500 masl). Batian, released in 2010, builds on this with the flavor characteristics of SL28 and SL34, offering a structured, fruit-forward profile.
Thangatha Estate is a hub for innovation in Kenyan coffee. It is the site of IoT fermentation trials, yeast strain matching by elevation and variety, and a closed-loop sustainability system that converts coffee waste into biogas for dairy and yogurt production.
