Central Kenya is the world’s best coffee growing region.

Sitting astride the equator at high altitude, the regions surrounding Mount Kenya form a perfect home for coffee. Rich volcanic soils, consistent rainfall, and level farmland, yet consistently 1000-2000+ meters above sea level.

Farm-direct

Founded by and with partner farms, Undugu sells directly to roasters. Unlike the majority of Kenyan coffee exports, we operate without collectives, middlemen, or distributors extracting value from the farmers.

This also allows us to offer single-site and single-block origin coffees — explore the diversity of riverside, mountain block, or shade-grown beans.

On-site

Coffee bean processing takes place on the farms, from hand-harvesting, through pulping, washing, fermentation, drying, and hulling.

Undugu micro-roasts samples of beans to cup and taste on the farm, giving an immediate feedback loop on the growing techniques. Partner farms receive the best prices based simply on quality and quantity.

Sustainable

In addition to finer sorting of bean size and density for even roasting, Undugu utilizes size C beans and smaller to maximize value for farmers and prevent waste. With a patent-pending process, the cascara juice from coffee cherries is reused to both enhance coffee beans and prevent water pollutants. All Undugu farms are certified as deforestation-free. We strive to eliminate waste in everything we do.

Undugu works with local farmers to, regardless of whether they are a partner. This includes the planting of macadamia trees for shade-grown coffee, farm plot analysis, shared processing equipment, and much more.
